Self-Contained Apartment in Historic Castle

This is a unique opportunity to stay in a medieval castle. The 12th century Chateau dominates the village of Boussagues. It is extremely spacious and comfortable (1200 sq feet) with a wonderful atmosphere. There is a master bedroom with a 12th century vaulted ceiling & a large 16th century fireplace and floor, there are French doors onto the courtyard. The 2nd bedroom is slightly smaller with exposed stone walls and 12th century flagstone floor. Between the bedrooms there is a modern shower-room, with hydrocabinet and WC, retaining original flagstones. The sitting room was the Great Hall, it has exposed stone walls, original flagstone floor and fireplace with a coat of arms from the 16th century above, it is furnished with antique furniture. There is also a large kitchen, with beamed ceiling and all modern appliances It has French doors onto the courtyard. Outside is the courtyard with BBQ and eating area. There is a 8 x 4 meter pool.

Accommodation

Bedrooms:	Bedroom 1 (200 sq feet) with double bed in 12th century room with 7 metre high arches, 16th century fireplace, french doors to courtyard. Bedroom 2 (160 sq feet) with double bed, 12th century flagstone floor beamed ceiling and views over the village.
Bathrooms:	En-suite shower room separates the 2 bedrooms. There is a mixture of ancient and modern, while retaining the original flagstones and some stone walls there is modern hydrocabinet, vanity unit and toilet.
Kitchen:	The 250 sq foot kitchen has a high beamed ceiling, 16th century tommette tiles and French doors onto the patio. Equipment includes – Gas cooker, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, coffee maker, kettle, toaster, iron and ironing board.
Living Rooms:	The 500 sq.ft. living room was the Great Hall of the north wing where they would have held banquets. There is a CD player, Satellite TV with video and DVD. There is a dining table with 6 Baronial chairs. It is comfortably furnished with period furniture.
Other:	See our website link at the bottom of this page for lots more photos and info on the castle and the village. I am sorry but we do not accept anyone under 21. There is a 7.3 x 3.7 meter pool. Unlimited wifi internet access of 8Mb.
Cleaning/towels/linen/maid service:	One set bed linen, towels, pool towels and bathrobes are provided for each bedroom. There will be a ‘Welcome Pack’ of bread, butter, cheese, milk, wine and orange juice for when you arrive.

Renovated Apartment in 12th Century Chateau de Boussagues

The 700 sq ft apartment will sleep 2 people only. The 8 x 4 metre swimming pool is shared with one other apartment and a private 600 sq ft terrace. We live on the premises and will be only too happy to help you make the most of your stay with us. If you want to get away from the stress of everyday life, this could be the place for you. There is virtually no traffic in the village, save the odd tractor. We are sorry, but we do not allow children under 12 years old. The tower apartment is to the East of the Chateau and was added to the original building in the 16th century. The large bedroom is situated in the tower and has an exposed stone wall with a meutrier window (arrow slit), this would have been the exterior of the 12th century building. The château stands above the village of Boussagues and the view down the valley over the rooftops and across the surrounding countryside and is quite breathtaking.

Other:	There is a 7.3 x 3.7 meter pool shared by one other apartment. There is unlimited wifi internet access of 8mb per second.

Notes on accommodation
During the winter months the apartment has central heating and a wood burning fire in the living room (wood supplied). Please be aware, as with all French villages we have a Church with bells that ring at 8am.

Accessibility
The apartment is not suitable for anyone with mobility problems.

Outside
The private enclosed terrace is 600 sq feet, electricity points, barbecue, sun loungers, table and chairs. There is a 8 x 4 meter pool.

Coast/Beach
The Mediterranean is about 40 minutes by car. Our nearst beaches are Valras Plage, Serignan, and Cap d’Agde.

Golf
We have 7 great courses within 1 hour. The local golf course at Lamalou is 15 minutes away, there are 9 holes but they are expanding it to 18. We have it on good authority from previous guests that the course, although only 9 holes, is better kept and more enjoyable to play than most UK courses.The other courses are at Juvingac Fontcaude, Cap d’Agde, Beziers, Montpellier Massane, Grande Motte and Coulondres.

Travel
The apartment is in the middle of 8 airports. Beziers 45mins, Montpelliers 1 hr 15 mins, Nimes 1hr 40 mins, Perpignan 1hr 35 mins, Carcassonne 1hr 25mins, Toulouse 2 hrs, Rodez and Girona 2hr 30 mins.

Distances
By car Bedarieux is 7km, Lodeve 20km, Beziers 45km. You can walk to La Tur sur Orb in 10 mins. La tour sur Orb has a Supermarket, Pizzaria and a Boulangerie. There are riding establishments within 10 mins drive, fishing within 15 mins, canoeing within 35 mins, windsurfing on Lac Salagou and Golf in lamalou, 15 minutes away. The apartment is half an hour from the thermal spa town of Avene.

Further details
Please remember that most shops in France close between 12pm-2pm although we have 2 supermarkets in Bedarieux that stay open throughout the day as well as Sunday mornings. There is a deposit of 30% and the balance 8 weeks prior to arrival. If you find that this apartment is booked we also have a 2 bedroomed apartment with owners direct Ref FR767.
Please note: We only accept bookings from Saturday to Saturday during the high season – (1 April – 22 October).
We accept bookings for long weekends and short breaks during the low season.

The Castle

The origins of the Chateau date back to 863 AD. The present castle was built about 1150 for the Seigneurs de Boussagues, around a south-west facing courtyard of about 2000 sq. ft. The floor area is about 8000 sq. ft.

The de Boussagues family lived here until the mid 1300′s it was then left to fall into disrepair and was bought by d’Alichoux de Senegra who restored it and added the North tower and North wing in the 16th century. The main tower and hall are of the 12th century, In the upper room of the South tower there are remains of medieval frescos. The castle was abandoned during the revolution and fell into disrepair again, it was bought again in 1900 by a father and son who started to renovate it, at the time there were no roofs and most of the wooden floors had collapsed.

History of Boussagues

In 863, Charles the Bald ordered the fortress of Boussagues, amongst others, to be demolished. The name of the site appears thus in historical records. At the present time there is no evidence of its origins further back than this.

The first mention of a Lord of Boussagues, in 1117, is of Deodat and his submission to his overlord, Bernard-Aton Trencavel, Vicomte of Béziers, (who was keen to retain his influence in the face of the powerful Counts of Catalonia and Toulouse). The Chateau is set in the beautiful Vallee d’Orb. The nearest large town
Bedarieux, (Pronounced, Bay – da, as in Dad – ree – er), the Maison de Tourisme has lots of leaflets with ‘What’s On’. The mountains you see are the Espinouse, which are the foothills of the Cevennes. This is one of the last unspoilt areas of rural France.

There are some lovely walks and drives around the surrounding area.
